When I visit the studios of fellow assemblage, mixed-media artists I get a kick out of looking through their stashes of art ingredients tucked away in drawers, bins and on shelves.
Here is a gallery of photos of some of the parts in my workshop.
Below the photo gallery is a video from the aftermath of a typewriter being taken apart.
In December 2017 the Thomas Fire was raging in the hills above Santa Barbara. The sky was raining ash and for health reasons it was best to stay indoors. Luckily I had help taking apart an old, non-functioning Underwood typewriter. When we got stuck, we made this video to send to artist friend Jeremy Mayer.
Tal Avitzur is an assemblage artist whose found-object sculptures are created from vintage items collected from the auto, aircraft and marine salvage yards of Southern California. Many of his fantasy-themed, mixed-media sculptures are heavily influenced by the science fiction, mythology and comic books of his youth. Tal's unique, whimsical, one-of-a-kind, steampunk-like art can be found in the homes, offices and man-caves of collectors who embrace their inner child. Tal's studio, workshop and gallery is located in Santa Barbara, California and is a short drive from Los Angeles, Ventura and San Luis Obispo counties.
